Job Description

At Day[9]’s unannounced game studio, we are crafting a next-generation multiplayer strategy game for PC. As a Senior Environment Artist, you will be responsible for creating breathtaking environments that enhance gameplay, narrative, and player immersion. You’ll collaborate closely with Art Direction, Design, and Tech Art to bring visually compelling spaces to life. This role requires exceptional artistic skills, strong technical proficiency, and the ability to work within a cohesive visual style while pushing for world-class quality.

Responsibilities

  • Environment Creation: Build high-quality 3D environments - including terrain, architecture, environmental assets, foliage, and set dressing - aligned with the game’s artistic vision.

  • Worldbuilding: Contribute to the overall mood, storytelling, and visual identity of environments through composition, lighting collaboration, and detail work.

  • Technical Implementation: Integrate assets into the game engine, ensuring they perform well within real-time constraints.

  • Cross-Discipline Collaboration: Work closely with designers, other artists, and engineers to ensure environments support gameplay objectives and performance requirements.

  • Optimization: Balance visual fidelity and performance using standard and creative optimization techniques for environmental assets, terrain, and materials.

  • Pipeline Development: Help refine environment art pipelines and tools to increase quality and efficiency across the team.

  • Polish & Iteration: Participate in frequent reviews, implementing feedback to uphold a high-quality bar across all environment assets.

  • Project Management: Work with the other leaders on the team to manage timelines, ensure deadlines are met, and identify any resource needs or roadblocks in production

  • Mentorship and Guidance: Provide feedback and mentorship to other artists, contributing to a collaborative and growth-focused team culture

Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in industry-standard software (e.g., Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter/Designer, Photoshop) and familiarity with modular workflows.

  • Artistic Skill: Strong understanding of composition, lighting, scale, material definition, architectural principles, and visual storytelling.

  • Game Engine Knowledge: Proficiency with modern game engines, including asset implementation, material creation, and optimization.

  • Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with other departments

  • Portfolio: A robust portfolio demonstrating high-quality environment art.

  • Vision: Willingness to work with the art director and other artists to drive the artistic direction for in-game environments.

  • Experience: Previous experience working as an Environment Artist in video games is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with lighting and environment composition is HIGHLY valued, but not required

  • Experience with concept art, character art, or related artistic disciplines is valued, but not required

  • Knowledge of modular or procedural environment asset creation pipelines

  • Experience playing RTS or MOBA titles
